Police arrested a gang of eight teens - boys and girls ranging in age from 13 to 19 - after chasing a rocketing stolen auto with no license plates tied to a robbery in Mesa County, the Moffat County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.
The wild chase - at speeds exceeding 100 mph - ended in a crash Wednesday. The vehicle, initially spotted by a Craig police officer, careened off Highway 40 near Hayden in Routt County and into a drainage ditch.
Six of the teens bailed out while it was still in motion and they were stopped by a Moffat Couty deputy, a state trooper and Hayden police officers as they sprinted toward the Yampa River.
The driver, a boy of 17 from Palisade, was booked into the Moffat County Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond and faces charges of Felony Vehicular Eluding, Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Misdemeanor Child Abuse, Reckless Endangerment, Driving Without a Valid Driver's License, as well as a Mesa County Warrant for Felony Aggravated Robbery with a Weapon.
The auto - a silver Dodge Durango - was stolen in Grand Junction.
Earlier, the vehicle had eluded police in Delta after stopping at a convenience store on Tuesday. Photos of two of the teens - dubbed "Thelma and Louise" by the Daily Sketch - inside the store were circulated by Delta police.
Authorities were surprised to discover there were eight teens aboard. They had anticipated just one or two.
A boy, age 15, was determined to be a runaway child.
