On Sunday, Nov. 18, 1990, El Paso County sheriff's deputies found the body of their colleague, Lieutenant Cecelia "C.C." Benefiel-Cipriani, at her home after she didn't report for duty.
Benefiel-Cipriani, 32, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was in her uniform - a sign she was killed just after her finishing prior shift. There was evidence she may have interrupted a burglary.
Several potential suspects were investigated but there were no arrests.
Cipriani-Benefiel joined the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in 1982. She lived near Dorchester Drive and West Navajo Street. She had been married to a state trooper.
"Several rooms of the home had been ransacked and valuables gathered together, but it is unknown what, if any items were actually removed from the house," the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said.
"No eyewitnesses were identified, and neighbors did not identify unusual activity around the house near the time of the crime, although, it was learned that several residential burglaries had recently occurred in the Ivywild area," CBI said.
