Through DNA testing, authorities determined serial killer Vincent Darrell Groves is responsible for the murder of a woman whose body was found at the bottom of an embankment in rural Douglas County on April Fools' Day 1987.
Rhonda Marie Fisher, 30, was last seen alive on the night of March 31 on Monaco Street near Leetsdale Drive in Denver, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. A passerby discovered her body on South Perry Park Road, south of Sedalia, April 1.
DNA recovered paper bags placed on Fisher’s hands to preserve trace evidence matched biological evidence from three of Groves' other victims who died in 1979.
"Obtaining a viable DNA profile from paper bags nearly four decades old is exceptionally rare and underscores the extraordinary value of meticulous evidence preservation and periodic forensic reevaluation," the sheriff's office said.
Groves murdered at least seven girls and women in Denver between 1978 and 1988. In 2012, DNA profiling proved his guilt in four murders - six years after he died in prison. Police suspect Groves could have been responsible for more than 20 murders.
