UPDATE
Two people from out of state died Sunday afternoon when a small airplane crashed near the Erie Municipal Airport runway, missing a row of homes, police said.
Emergency services raced to the scene - but it was too late.
"Our deepest sympathies are with their families and loved ones," police said on social media. "We recognize that this incident may have been difficult for many in our community to witness or hear about."
The city-owned airport was closed to traffic for an investigation by federal authorities, police said. Erie is located in Weld County.
In another western air tragedy, a father and his two daughters died Friday in a plane crash in the Montana wilderness, the New York Post reports.
