DAILY SKETCH ASKS: SHOULD STAND-UP SCOOTERS BE BANNED?

There's been another stand-up scooter accident with a serious injury - a collision Thursday with an auto at
29th and Fox streets in Denver. We don't have any details, but we see a life-threatening pattern in general. No helmets. Failure to observe stop signs. Ear buds. Cell phones. Two riders. Lack of experience. Close calls with pedestrians. Close calls with autos. Failure to signal. Sidewalk jockeys. Racing. Alcohol and dope. And let's not forget careless and inattentive motorists ... plus plain-old bad luck. We're not calling for "nanny state" interference - but danger is danger. Injuries involving scooters are typically moderate or severe, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons warns. Not minor. Not mild. One in three injured riders go to the emergency room or trauma center, national data show ... Ouch.

H
ead trauma accounts for almost half of scooter injuries with riders risking skull fractures, cerebral bleeds and brain damage, experts warn.

Everyone beware.
