Red flag fire warnings are up today for the Front Range to the eastern plains as well as southeast Colorado in anticipation of fierce winds crashing over the Rockies.
Utilities warn cautionary power outages are possible to lower fire risk from downed and sparking wires. Fire and rescue services are on high alert.
Outdoor burning restrictions are in place. Outdoor welding is ill-advised as are spark-prone towing chains.
The National Weather Service in Boulder says: "Strong winds, critical fire weather conditions, and mountain snow are all in the forecast." The weather service office in Pueblo expects the strongest winds to hit the southeast this evening.
Bordering areas of Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas and New Mexico are also at risk.
