The Federal Aviation Administration warns lithium-ion batteries can erupt in "thermal runaway" in the sky - and that's what apparently happened aboard this frightening Air China trip.
Flight 139 to Korea made an emergency landing in Shanghai. Flight attendants extinguished the flames. No one was hurt in May's mayhem.
On social media, Air China said a “a lithium battery in a passenger’s carry-on luggage stored in the overhead compartment spontaneously ignited.”
The batteries are common in laptops, cell phones, etc.
