WIND-WHIPPED YUMA COUNTY BURNS FOR SECOND DAY

After an overnight outbreak of wind-whipped brush fires scorched thousands of acres of Yuma County, firefighters contended with a stubborn blaze Thursday near the community of Eckley, officials said.

Wednesday night's winds hit 70 mph, knocking down live power lines in the northeast Colorado county near the Kansas state line.
The largest blaze, the County Road 33 Fire, which consumed 12,000 acres, continued to burn Thursday. The County Road L Fire, which burned about 2,000 acres, and the County Road 44 Fire, which scorched about 50 acres, were stopped.

"Emergency responders remain focused on containing the active fire and responding to any additional flare-ups as the high-wind conditions persist," Yuma County emergency officials said. No serious injuries have been reported. No livestock have been reported lost. The sheriff's office said an empty pig barn and an abandoned trailer were destroyed while two small structures were damaged. A Red Flag fire warning remained in effect.

In Denver, Governor Jared Polis said: "Our focus is on action and safety in Yuma County. Fire departments are on scene in Yuma County, with multiple fires reported and crews working to contain them."
