FIRE CHIEF: 6 DEAD IN RURAL KEENESBURG DAIRY TRAGEDY

UPDATE

Six people died in a dairy accident in rural Weld County, fire officials said Thursday.

Firefighters found the victims during a "confined space" rescue attempt Wednesday evening in the 32000-block of Weld County Road 18 in Keenesburg, 40 miles northeast of Denver.

Confined space - in fire service terminology - can refer to tanks, underground pits, utility vaults and industrial piping.

"Crews responded and took appropriate precautions to enter the space to perform rescue operations," said Tom Beach, chief of the Southeast Weld County Fire District.

Firefighters recovered the bodies from the confined space, Beach said.

A Chamber of Commerce website shows there is a business called Prospect Valley Dairy LLC at 32063 County Road 18 in Keenesburg. The fire department didn't identify the dairy in its press release.

TV helicopter images showed a sprawling plant with a variety of buildings and storage structures surrounded by farmland.
