COLD CASE: BILLY THE KID? SALIDA TOWN MARSHAL MURDERED BY CATTLE RUSTLERS

Salida Town Marshal Baxter Stingley was murdered while attempting to arrest two cattle rustlers - and Old West outlaw Billy the Kid was said to have been a prime suspect.

His gun drawn, the marshal approached the rustlers - but one of them was a faster draw and shot Stingley three times.

The murder has never been solved.

"Marshal Stingley's deputy, Hugh Holmes, is said to have chased Billy the Kid to California after the shooting but was unable to apprehend him," according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

There's a reason for that. Billy the Kid was shot and killed in New Mexico on July 14, 1881 - and Stingley was slain on Oct. 28, 1883.

News apparently traveled slowly in the Old West.
