A former municipal official is accused of diverting $26,000 in public funds to personal bank accounts, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said Tuesday.
Tyra Marie Avila, 47, who served as administrator, clerk, and treasurer for the Town of Aguilar for 17 years, faces a variety of felony charges. She resigned last year.
"Money from federal loans and grants earmarked for the Augmentation Reservoir project was allegedly commingled with the Town's general fund and used for unauthorized personal transactions and other town expenses, ultimately leaving contractors for the critical water project unpaid," CBI said.
Aguilar is located in Las Animas County in southern Colorado.
