Slicing a hole in America' safety net, the White House announced Sunday plans to suspend the food stamp program effective Nov. 1 due to the federal funding standoff with Congress.
Colorado officials from the state Capitol to city halls and county boards - as well as churches and charities - have been bracing for a feeding crisis.
At the Salvation Army, cupboards are running bare. “We started seeing it about two weeks ago. This week has been at its height and if trends continue, it seems it’ll just get worse,” Salvation Army Lieutenant Carl Esquivel told Fox 31.
Governor Jared Polis said: “In Colorado, we love everyone and take hunger seriously. I am so disappointed to see the federal government seems to have no urgency or desire to stop families from going hungry.”
Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera said: "Colorado will continue to do everything we can to ensure people don’t go hungry."
