BRIGHTON CARJACKING SUSPECT NOW CHARGED IN WOMAN'S SLAYING
UPDATE
Brighton's violent carjacking suspect James Benavidez, 50, has now been charged in the murder of a woman whose body was found in an abandoned vehicle, police said late Saturday.
Police identified the dead woman as Keeley Koff, 32. She suffered an "apparent gunshot wound." Her body was located Thursday morning in the 200-block of North 6th Avenue, police said.
Benavidez - who sports face tattoos - was arrested a few hours later, initially on charges stemming from a wild carjacking, chase and gunfight that riddled police patrol cars with bullets.
Charges in that matter include attempted homicide of several police officers.
The carjacking occurred at the Murphy Express filling station at 59 East Bromley Lane in Brighton. The suspect is accused of shooting the owner of the auto, abandoning it and seizing a second vehicle from an acquaintance before it all ended at Brighton Road and East 105th Lane.
Brighton High School was put on lockdown, Fox 31 said.
Benavidez, also known as Jaime, was shot and wounded by police. He was jailed at the Adams County Detention Center. Cash bond was set at $100,000, jail records show.
9News said the suspect has 60 prior arrests on his record and has been imprisoned seven times.
