BEWARE FORAGING BEARS, KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PICNIC BASKET

Mind your trash, recycling, BBQ grills - and small pets.

Bears are entering what scientists call hyperphagia, when they’re gobbling non-stop with winter approaching - roaming up to 20 hours a day in search of provisions.
"When natural sources of food become scarce, a bear's drive to search for food can overcome its fear of humans," Colorado Parks and Wildlife warns. "Twenty chicken sandwiches, 10 large orders of french fries, 10 soft drinks and 10 milkshakes is the approximate fast food order needed to total 20,000 calories. That is how many calories black bears try to consume every single day as they pack on the pounds to build up their fat reserves to survive the winter."

Up to 18,500 black bears inhabit Colorado, scientists say. That's a lot of French Fries.
