The Air Force launched a test flight of an unarmed Minuteman III rocket - the type stationed in nuclear silos dotting Weld and Logan counties and bordering states.
"This test validated the reliability, adaptability, and modularity of the weapon system,” Colonel Dustin Harmon, commander of the 377th Test and Evaluation Group, said in a press release.
The ICBM lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Wednesday and arched toward a test site at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands - a flight of 4,200 miles, the Air Force said.
“The data collected during the test is invaluable in ensuring the continued reliability and accuracy of the ICBM weapon system,” said Lieutenant Colonel Karrie Wray, commander of the 576th Flight Test Squadron.
