Denver's bomb squad disposed of a disturbing discovery inside a stolen auto - a realistic but "hoax" grenade.
A suspect was stopped by patrol officers in the 2200-block of North Roslyn Street on Feb. 14, police disclosed Tuesday. He was wanted on an active flight warrant and arrested. Then they found the frightening device.
Police provided this account of the incident:
"Officers observed a male suspect removing license plates and entering the vehicle. When they attempted to contact the suspect, he fled into a nearby house and attempted to shut the door on officers.
"Officers were able to prevent him from barricading himself in the residence and safely took him into custody. During a search of the stolen vehicle, officers discovered a suspected live grenade.
"The Bomb Unit responded and safely recovered the device which looked viable. Upon additionally investigation, the device was found to be a hoax."
Police didn't release the name of the suspect.
