A pop of the hood revealed a litter of baby squirrels snuggled in the engine compartment of an auto at a repair shop in Westminster.
Their startled mother ran away. The shop called the city, and the city sent an animal control officer who "set up a squirrel reunion box to keep the babies warm and safe while waiting for her to return," police said. "Staff even played baby squirrel sounds in hopes of luring her back," police said. "Unfortunately, mom never came back for the reunion" and the neonates were transferred to the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for safe keeping. [Photos: Westminster Police]
