FREIGHT TRAIN STOPS BEFORE PLOWING INTO DRUNK IN COMMERCE CITY

A BNSF freight train crew slammed on the emergency brakes in Commerce City, missing a drunken driver in an SUV perched on the railroad tracks, police said Friday.

In addition to being intoxicated, the motorist was driving with a suspended license - and had neither a valid registration nor insurance.

He "couldn't explain to officers how he had ended up in this precarious and dangerous predicament," police said.

The incident occurred in the 4600-block of Mill Road on Thursday night. No one was hurt, the motorist was arrested, the auto was impounded and the train was cleared to pass.
