GAS LEAK, CIGARETTE LIGHTER BLAMED IN LAKEWOOD BLAST

Investigators said an explosion at a Lakewood townhome was caused by leaking natural gas ignited by a cigarette lighter.

The accidental blast, which lifted the roof off the dwelling, occurred in a basement storage room and caused $170,000 in damage on March 16, according to West Metro Fire.

Investigators identified three possible sources: the furnace, the water heater or a broken underground natural gas line outside the townhome. The incident occurred on 17th Place near Robb Street. [Photo: West Metro Fire]
