REFINERY BELCHES FLAMES IN COMMERCE CITY

A giant tower at a petroleum refinery in Commerce City belched fire and smoke after a power outage on Monday.

Police responded to the scene for traffic control. No injuries were reported.
"
No action by the public is required," Suncor Energy Inc. said. Such "venting" is common after a mechanical shutdown. The facility at 5801 Brighton Boulevard, near the Denver border, is the largest refinery in the Rocky Mountain region and processes 98,000 barrels a day.

"Flaring, steam venting, and fire training are part of normal, day-to-day operations as well as maintenance activities," according to Suncor's website.
