A coroner identified the inmates killed at the Bent County Correctional Facility as Michael Fisher, 59, a murderer serving a life sentence, and Charles Gates, 27, an auto thief.
A third inmate at the medium-security prison was injured. The state corrections department declined to provide further details of Saturday night's incident.
Bent County sheriff's deputies responded to the prison after inmates were discovered missing during a count, the Denver Post reported.
