Mountain rescuers from Custer and Saguache counties saved a climber who was seriously injured descending Crestone Needle on Monday. Flight for Life transported a technical rope rescue team to Cottonwood Lake "to begin ascending to the injured man," Custer County Search and Rescue said. The victim, who was in a group of five, was hoisted by a Colorado National Guard helicopter. "His fall was witnessed by his climbing partners and several other climbers who provided initial assistance including calling 911," rescue officials said. The officials added: "We are sensitive to the emotional and psychological stress of witnessing an event like this, and we encourage everyone to practice self-care."
