COLORADO'S FIRST GOVERNOR CHAMPIONED WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE

John Routt - elected Colorado's first state governor in 1876 - was a champion of women's suffrage.

He served as governor in the early 1890s, too.

His wife, Eliza, was a p
ioneer in the women's suffrage movement. She was the first woman to register to vote in Colorado in 1893.

The governor
escorted suffragist leader Susan B. Anthony on a speaking tour around the state.

Colorado was third in the U.S. to grant women the right to vote following Wyoming and Utah.

Routt served as territorial governor of Colorado during the Civil War and organized volunteers who defeated Confederate forces at Glorieta Pass.

Routt County is named in his honor. He also served as Denver's mayor.
