I-70 MAYHEM: TEEN DIES AS TRUCK HITS STATE PATROL CAR, SEMI EAST OF BYERS

A Ford F-150 smashed into a state patrol car and a semi on I-70 east of Byers early Wednesday, killing a teenage passenger in the pickup truck.

The pickup driver was seriously injured in the accident about 50 miles east of Denver.

The state trooper - who was parked and investigating an earlier wreck involving a semi-truck - was transported to hospital as a precaution.

Initial reports show the trooper's patrol car was partially blocking the left lane of westbound I-70 while tow trucks worked to remove the semi from the center median.

"The driver of the F-150 lost control, striking the patrol vehicle and sideswiping the passenger side," the patrol said. "The F-150 continued westbound, entering the center median, striking the guardrail, and then striking the rear driver's side of the semi-trailer."

The dead passenger was a male, aged 19. The injured diver is a male, aged 18.
