Denver's famed Colfax Avenue is named for Schuyler Colfax, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives during the Civil War and vice president under Ulysses S. Grant.
"Colfax had visited Denver in 1865, and locals may have named the street after him to gain national support from the prominent Indiana congressman for Colorado's ongoing statehood initiative," according to Wikipedia.
If so, it worked. Colorado won statehood in 1876, during the Grant presidency - and Grand Avenue (not to be confused with downtown Denver's Grant Street) was renamed Colfax Avenue.
