South Metro Fire Rescue - one of the largest fire departments in the Denver area - is facing "an immediate and significant budget shortfall" due to recently enacted legislation lowering Colorado property taxes, officials warn.
It projects a $16 million shortfall next year and a nearly $270 million gap over the next the next decade 10 years.
"Without additional revenue by 2026, we will not be able to maintain the high level of fire and emergency services our residents expect and rely on," officials warn. "Since 2019, demand for our services has grown 20%, and it’s not slowing down."
South Metro operates 30 fire stations serving Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson counties, 12 municipalities and Centennial Airport.
