More than 200 students, teachers and passersby gawked at three “metallic discs” or “flying saucers” silently crossing over Westall High School and Westall State School near Melbourne, Australia.
“I can remember running out into the oval, looking into the sky, and seeing these things, and just standing there absolutely transfixed,” a science teacher said.
The incident, which occurred April 6, 1966, has been dubbed "Australia's Roswell" after the famed UFO case in New Mexico, according to news.com.au.
“It never occurred to us that it didn’t happen or was an optical illusion," a student said. "If it was, it was a pretty good optical illusion."
School officials declined to discuss the matter at the time.
One possible explanation was that the "flying saucers" were tracking balloons monitoring a British nuclear test site in central Australia and were blown off course, a researcher suggested years later.
