NAB SUSPECT IN DENVER'S GIANT LEETSDALE INFERNO

UPDATE

Tony Becerra, 38, of Aurora, was arrested as a suspect in Denver's Leetsdale Drive inferno - one of the worst blazes in city history, the fire department said Wednesday.

Surveillance footage showed him entering and leaving the apartment building construction site shortly before the five-alarm fire erupted Jan. 2.

Images obtained by Denver 7 showed a person dressed in black walking along fencing on Leetsdale Drive as well as a closeup of a man resembling the suspect at a nearby shop wearing a white shirt. It was difficult to determine from the images what the man had in his possession.

Becerra was taken into custody Tuesday in Aurora. Federal and state authorities worked with Denver fire investigators. No charges were announced.

911 callers had reported seeing a homeless person on the premises - but Becerra isn't homeless, the fire department said. He was reported to have a record of trespassing.

More than 100 firefighters - from Denver, Aurora and South Metro - battled the giant blaze. The ruins smoldered for days. Cadaver dogs found no human remains at the site. There had been unconfirmed reports of fireworks nearby.

Aurora was the scene of a major construction site fire on Dec. 16, 2023, at East Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street. The cause was never determined.
