A single-engine aircraft crashed into Emerald Mountain near Steamboat Springs early Friday, killing four people, officials said.
The single-engine craft came down shortly after midnight in a very remote area, Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar told Steamboat Radio.
Routt County Search and Rescue personnel trekked to the scene on snowmobiles, track vehicles and by foot, the sheriff said. The four victims were located and taken by the county coroner.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was an Epic E1000 registered to a leasing company in Tennessee. It could seat six people. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the Friday the 13th accident.
The aircraft was approaching Bob Adams Airport in Steamboat Springs from the south and crashed into the “south-facing side" of the mountain, the sheriff told the Steamboat Pilot & Today newspaper.
