The Denver Gazette reports a federal agency is warning that robot cars - like Waymo taxis serving Denver - pose a danger to police cars, fire engines and ambulances racing to emergencies.
In letter to autonomous vehicle developers, Jonathan Morrison, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said the agency identified “a clear pattern" of robot cars failing to respond to flashing lights as well as driving onto emergency scenes, the Gazette reports.
“This is unacceptable,” Morrison said. “To state it bluntly: an AV that cannot safely interact with first responders is a danger to the general public."
Without directly addressing the letter, Waymo told the Gazette: "Waymo works proactively with first responders in every community where we operate, including in Denver.”
