Authorities attempted to negotiate "a peaceful surrender" Wednesday with a gunman who opened fire on deputies from a home in Custer County, the sheriff's office said.
No injuries were reported at the two-story dwelling on Rock Ridge Road.
Deputies arrived on the scene at 11:23 a.m. and reported episodes of "small arms gunfire" that continued into the afternoon, officials said.
The initial call came in at 9:49 a.m. but was deemed a low priority.
A deputy and a clinician attempted to negotiate with the gunman as an armored SWAT vehicle stood by on the scene. The state patrol and Chaffee County Sheriff's Office sent emergency assistance.
Custer County is located in south central Colorado. The county seat is Westcliffe.
"An emergency alert was sent via Everbridge with a shelter in place order for residents within a five-mile radius," the sheriff's office said.
