A man nicknamed "Smiles" was shot in the head execution-style while walking down a street listening to a radio.
Larry Loucka, 28, was fatally hurt in the 400-block of East 11th Avenue in Denver on Sept. 8, 1974 - and died early the next day, police said. Louka had just moved back to Denver from Phoenix and his last known address was 1630 Humbolt Street.
"His assailant fired three shots," the Rocky Mountain News said. "At least one of the bullets hit Loucka under the right ear."
The gunman turned and ran. Detective Ralph Callahan told the News no motive had been established and nothing was taken. The case went cold.
The Smaldone crime family - suspected in a number of execution-style murders over the years - was still active in Denver in 1974.
