STATE PATROL REPORTS ON KAYLEE RUSSELL CRASH TRAGEDY NEAR TIMNATH

The Colorado State Patrol issued a report Wednesday on the mystery crash that killed Kaylee Russell - tying texting, marijuana and speeding to the tragedy.

Russell, 20, of Ault, went missing Nov. 29. Her body was found Dec. 4 inside her wrecked Volkswagen Tiguan in a canal along Larimer County Road 1 near Timnath. Authorities conducted an extensive search and appealed to the public for help in a gripping drama.

"Following receipt of the toxicology report on the driver, marijuana use was confirmed, and impairment is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash," the state patrol said.

"The driver was traveling 60 miles per hour in a curve with an advised speed of 25 miles per hour and was actively using a mobile device to send text messages at the time of the crash," the patrol said.

Investigators determined Russell's "
Tiguan failed to negotiate the curve and drove off the right side of the road, where there was a large embankment for a canal. The Tiguan went up the steep embankment, colliding with a utility marker, continuing up the embankment. The Tiguan rolled into the canal, coming to rest on its roof, partially submerged in water," the patrol said.

Russell died of blunt force trauma and exposure to the cold, the Larimer County Medical Examiner's Office said in December.
