University of Colorado football player Dominiq Ponder died early Sunday in a fiery auto accident in Boulder County, the state patrol said.
Ponder, 23, of Opa Locka, Florida, was the sole occupant of a Tesla Model 3 that veered off westbound Baseline Road near Newland Court at 3 a.m.
University Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders said on social media: "Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader."
The state patrol said: "The Tesla went across the eastbound lane and hit a guardrail. The vehicle continued through the guardrail. The Tesla then struck an electrical line pole and rolled down an embankment landing on its wheels and catching on fire. The driver was pronounced dead on scene."
Ponder, a backup quarterback, saw action in two games during the 2025 season and made his collegiate debut against Arizona.
