GOVERNOR ON ESCORT BILL: SUPPORTS ADULTS' RIGHTS TO MAKE OWN DECISIONS

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signaled he may possibly sign a bill that would drop criminal penalties for privately selling or paying for sex between adults across the state.

The legislation would make Colorado the most permissive of U.S. states.

The governor "will review this bill as it moves through the process but supports an adult’s right to make their own decisions about their bodies,” a spokesperson said last month.

“He also wants to better understand how any changes to this area of law can also better protect against crimes such as human trafficking,” the spokesperson said.

The bill "e
xpressly preempts statutory or home rule city, town, city and county, or county ordinances, resolutions, regulations, or codes criminalizing commercial sexual activity," the Colorado General Assembly said.

However, "the bill maintains current state criminal penalties for pandering that involves menacing or criminal intimidation and for pimping."
