MAYHEM AS COPS CHASE WRONG-WAY DRIVER FOR 20 MILES ON I-70

Deputies stopped a wrong-way driver early Tuesday on Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel after a wild, 20-mile chase, the state patrol said.

The mayhem began in Idaho Springs - and along the way the wrong-way driver caused another auto to crash into a semi-truck on the heavily traveled highway through the Rocky Mountains, rupturing the semi's fuel tank.

"The driver entered Interstate 70 going westbound in the eastbound lanes of travel," the state patrol said. "The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office was responding to assist Idaho Springs when the vehicle almost struck a deputy's vehicle.

"Deputies began to pursue, while the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, and continued traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes,"
 the patrol said.

The wrong-way driver was arrested and transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported.  Idaho Springs is about 30 miles west of Denver.
