POLICE ARREST 4, SEIZE GUNS, GRENADE AND DOPE
On June 17, the Denver police auto theft task force arrested four suspects in a stolen SUV in the vicinity of West 13th Avenue and Federal Boulevard and seized a variety of merchandise, including two AK-47 rifles, two handguns, an inert hand grenade and suspected fentanyl. The driver was a convicted felon and two of the occupants had active warrants. The SUV had no license plates.
SEEK CLUES IN NIGHT CLUB DRIVE-BY SLAYING
Aurora police are seeking information on a drive-by shooting that killed a man outside an East Colfax Avenue night club in the early hours of Aug. 11, 2024.
Witnesses said a blue sedan drove into the night club parking lot and opened fire. "Investigators believe the crowd was randomly targeted by the suspect or suspects," police said.
The Adams County Coroner’s Office identified the dead man as Rafael Rivera-Velez, 25, of Roma, Texas. Another man was injured in the hail of bullets. The club is located in the 11200-block of East Colfax Avenue.
"There is no suspect description and no additional information about the suspect vehicle. All investigative leads developed to date have been exhausted," police said in a June 6 statement.

A man was shot Sunday night in the 1800-block of North Emerson Street in Denver and his injuries were considered "non-life threatening," police said.

2 STABBED TO DEATH IN AURORA
Reports say two men were stabbed to death in Aurora early Sunday and police are investigating whether there is a connection.
The first fatal stabbing was reported in the 1600-block on North Moline Street.
The second stabbing was reported at a bus stop on Peoria Street near East Colfax Avenue, which is close to the North Moline Street crime scene.

The Denver Zoo has awarded names to its desert big horn rams representing "the rugged landscapes they call home in the wild." "Dune, the largest and oldest at eight years old was named for the towering mounds of sand that shape the desert," the zoo says. "Mojave, or Mo, is six and his name is a nod to the Mojave Desert and Mojave National Preserve, where desert bighorn sheep roam. "Last but not least, four-year-old Zion's name honors Zion National Park, part of their native range and a site of successful reintroduction after the species was extirpated there in the 1960s."

Aurora police arrested two suspects in a May 21 shooting that killed a man and injured a teenage boy, officials said Friday. The crime occurred in the 3100-block of Ursula Street. The suspects are both male, ages 17 and 18. The Adams County Coroner’s Office identified the dead man as Ernesto Jae Sandoval, 18, of Wheat Ridge.

Baca, 44, who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act in March, has been held in the Denver Jail. Few But Plenty thugs are responsible for dozens of drive-by shootings targeting rivals in west Denver between 2019 and 2022.
"In numerous instances, innocent bystanders who had nothing to do with the inter-gang feuds were the victims of this violence," the DA's Office said.
POLIS ASSAILS 'SAD' U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION
Calling it "a sad day," Colorado Governor Jared Polis assailed Friday's U.S. Supreme Court decision that curbs the ability of lower courts to overrule a president's executive orders.
The high court's action clears the way for the White House to proceed with efforts to withhold birthright citizenship and press on with other presidential actions.
Said Polis: "President Trump’s unlawful executive order and this decision weakens our ability to preserve well-established constitutional rights, creating a patchwork where rights might be upheld in some states and rolled back in others.

ARREST IN QUINCE STREET SHOOTING
Denver police arrested a suspect for investigation of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon in Thursday night's shooting in the 700-block North Quince Street. The suspect is a man, aged 25. "The shooting appears to have stemmed from an altercation involving people known to each other," police said Friday. "Victim's injuries are non-life threatening." The shooting victim drove to the hospital.

SECOND MAN CHARGED IN ERICA LONG KIDNAP; HE'S FROM VEGAS

Authorities in Nevada arrested a second suspect in the Internet luring and disappearance of Aurora teen Erica Long, police said Thursday.
Long, 14, was found safe Wednesday at the Las Vegas home of Cameron Scruggs, 25, who faces charges of kidnapping in Colorado and a related crime in Nevada, Aurora Police Commander Marc Paolino said at a news conference.
"This whole situation came about from chat rooms and social media," Paolino said.
Paolino said Long left her home early on June 16 in the company of a man named Christian Williamson, 26, of Kremmling, Colorado, who faces Internet crime charges in the dramatic case. Williamson and Long then checked into a hotel in Lakewood on June 16 and Scruggs met them June 17 and drove Long to Nevada, Paolino said. Authorities also investigated the possibility of a "female accomplice," he said. Long was last seen by her family on the evening on June 15, Father's Day. Her parents later found a journal detailing a plan to run away, providing leads for investigators, Paolino said.

Police filed Internet crime charges against Christian Williamson, 26, in the Father's Day disappearance of Erica Long, 14, of Aurora, who has been found safe in Las Vegas. The suspect was being detained in Grand County, Colorado, about 120 miles northwest of Aurora. His home is in Kremmling. Colorado. "Investigators learned about prior communication between Christian and Erica dating back several months," Aurora police said. "Additional charges related to her disappearance are expected. The investigation remains active and ongoing." Aurora police were working with Las Vegas authorities "regarding a possible suspect there, as well as efforts to bring Erica home."

Police announced Wednesday evening that missing Aurora teen Erica Long has been found safe in Las Vegas - and a suspect is in custody.
Long, 14, who also goes by the name Ember, was last seen on Father's Day.
"ERICA HAS BEEN FOUND AND IS SAFE," Aurora police said on social media just after 5 p.m. Police also disclosed "a 26-year-old man was identified as being involved and detained. He gave investigators information that Erica was in Las Vegas, NV. Charges are pending against that man." Las Vegas police and agents from the FBI's Las Vegas field office located the teen. Colorado's Kremmling Police Department and Grand County Sheriff's Office played key roles in solving the case as did federal law enforcement, Aurora police said. "The investigation is ongoing, with multiple jurisdictions," Aurora police said. On Tuesday, Long's family issued a statement saying "Erica, we love you!" and appealing for her return. They also offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information on the teen's whereabouts. Long left her home near East Dry Creek Drive and South Gartrell Road in Aurora at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 15. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation worked with Aurora police early on in the case. The CBI issued an "Endangered Missing Alert." The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children also issued an alert.

"Colfax had visited Denver in 1865, and locals may have named the street after him to gain national support from the prominent Indiana congressman for Colorado's ongoing statehood initiative," according to Wikipedia.
If so, it worked. Colorado won statehood in 1876, during the Grant presidency - and Grand Avenue (not to be confused with downtown Denver's Grant Street) was renamed Colfax Avenue.

Police in south Texas arrested a fugitive tow truck driver wanted by Aurora police on charges of shooting and wounding his wife, officials said Tuesday.A Texas state trooper stopped Juan Carlos Rivera Garcia, 42, and another man near the Mexican border in an SUV. Gracia's wife suffered multiple gunshot wounds inside a home on East Virginia Place in Aurora on June 16 - and he fled in a black, white and gray flatbed tow truck. The Aurora Police Department's fugitive and narcotics unit developed information that Garcia was headed toward the border and alerted law enforcement agencies in other states. Garcia, a native of Honduras, was booked into the Maverick County, Texas, jail last Thursday. He will be extradited to Colorado and faces charges of attempted murder, assault, child abuse and domestic violence.
POLICE SHOOT, KILL GUNMAN NEAR SCHOOL

Police killed a gunman during a foot chase near Kepner Beacon Middle School, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said early Tuesday.
The gunman "fired at the officers as he was fleeing the officers," the chief said. "The officers then opened fire."
Two Denver officers and a school safety officer were involved in the shooting, which occurred late Monday in the 900-block of South Hazel Court.
They were dispatched to the school to investigate a man and woman on the property. The woman left the area.

A stabbing Monday night injured a person near East Colfax Avenue and North Washington Street in Denver, police said. In a separate incident, a collision between a motorcycle and an auto resulted in a serious injury near West 10th Avenue and North Federal Boulevard.

GOOD SAMARITANS PULL DRIVER FROM FLAMING TRUCK THAT FLEW OFF I-76

Good Samaritans rescued the driver of a flaming truck that sped off I-76, struck a guardrail, plunged off an overpass - and exploded, Adams County Fire Rescue said. "Bystanders quickly stepped in, pulling the driver from the burning vehicle and beginning CPR," fire officials said. The driver was transported to a hospital from Sunday night's fiery crash finale on Tennyson Street. Adams County Engine 12 was the first fire crew on the scene. The Westminster Fire Department also responded to the wreck.

A jury Monday convicted George Vigil of manslaughter in the stabbing death of his uncle during an argument and scuffle over hot sauce.
Vigil, 20, faces 2 to 6 years in state prison, according to the Denver DA's office. His sentencing is set for Aug. 22. The jury in the four-day trial deliberated for five hours.
The fatal attack over the bottled condiment occurred Sept. 22, 1994, at a home on North Federal Boulevard near West 23rd Avenue.
A police probable cause statement said Vigil was known to carry a switchblade.
DA John Walsh called the crime "senseless."

One person suffered smoke inhalation in a house fire Saturday night near 17th Avenue and Argonne Street in Aurora, fire officials said.
COLD CASE: THE CABARET MURDERS

Flames jutted from the windows of The Connection at 2398 West Alameda Ave., near South Zuni Steet, when Denver firefighters arrived early that morning.
An accelerant, possibly gasoline, fueled the blaze near the dance floor, said fire department Lieutenant Jim Persichitte, quoted by the Rocky Mountain News.
Booths and tables were soaked in the stuff.
After the blaze was out, firefighters discovered the bodies of musician Camilo Roys Jr., 28, of 6661 Green Court in Adams County and waitress Lillian J. Hurtado, 22, of 8331 Oakwood St., also in Adams County.
It appeared as if they were trying to escape the blaze.
Autopsies determined Roys and Hurtado succumbed to smoke inhalation, police said.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for a "hot and breezy day" Friday - with the thermometer bubbling up to 100 degrees in the Denver area.
Wing gusts could be as high as 28 mph.
"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioned rooms," the weather service said. "Stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors."
The heat advisory will remain in effect into the weekend. Saturday's temperature could hit 98 degrees along the I-25 corridor, the weather service said. Sunday's high could reach 95 degrees.
Looking ahead to next week, moisture is expected to return to the Denver area, with temperatures at or below seasonal norms.
RAGING EARLY MORNING BLAZE GUTS HOME

Firefighters battled a raging blaze that roared through a home early Friday at Eastman Avenue and Bannock Street on Denver's southside.
Flames leapt through the roof of the brick dwelling. "Crews arrived on scene with heavy fire and smoke showing," the Denver Fire Department reported.
The structure was a total loss. There was no word on injuries.

A pedestrian was struck and killed early Friday on the westbound 6th Avenue highway at North Sheridan Boulevard in Denver.

SEMI-TRUCK WRECK NEAR I-70
One person was seriously injured in a collision between a semi-truck and an auto Thursday in the vicinity of East Northfield Boulevard and North Quebec Street, Denver police reported. The accident scene is on the eastside of the city, near I-70.
COLD CASE FILE: BLUE BIRD MYSTERY
Daniel Linn - a carpenter said to be a regular at Denver's old Blue Bird Cocktail Lounge - suffered a fatal gunshot wound early on the morning of Oct. 15, 1975.
The case remains open after 50 years.
Linn, 24, of 4926 Adams St., was found near the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Josephine Street, a few miles from the lounge, which was located at 3416 East Colfax Ave.
Linn died two days later at Denver General Hospital, The Rocky Mountain News reported. He was shot in the head. Police were unable to interview him.
Linn was buried at the Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Wheat Ridge. Today, the site of the Blue Bird Cocktail Lounge is occupied by the PS Lounge. The cocktail sign remains.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery on June 19, 1865 - the date when a U.S. Army general ordered final enforcement of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
Texas was the holdout, the last to free slaves. The Confederacy had surrendered that April.
"This date serves as a reminder to continue the fight for freedom and justice, celebrate diversity, and build a more inclusive Colorado for All," Governor Jared Polis said. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said: "Today, we celebrate something that took far too long to enact: freedom for all. As a foundational cornerstone and inalienable right for our country, these freedoms are worth defending every single day."
