A person was seriously injured Thursday when a motorcycle and auto collided on westbound I-70 near Peoria Street, according to Denver police.

A person suffered a gunshot wound early Thursday in the 5500-block of East 33rd Street in Denver's Park Hill while a person was injured in a shooting in the 2800-block of Arapahoe Street in the Curtis Park section of the city, police said.  

COCA-COLA PLAN LOSES FIZZ

 
A Coca-Cola bottler is scrapping plans to build a replacement for its aged bottling plant on Denver's York Street - and intends to start from scratch.

In a statement Wednesday, bottler Swire Coca-Cola said: "Unforeseen delays and ongoing timeline instability have severely impacted the viability and delivery of the project. As such, we will no longer pursue the originally proposed location for the development of a new production plant.

"We will select a different location where we can establish a more reliable timeline for building the new facility."

Original plans called for the replacement to be located near Denver International Airport. York Street is "the oldest Coca-Cola bottling plant in the country and has reached the end of its planned operational life," Swire said.

Denver police said Wednesday they are conducting a homicide investigation in the 8400-block of East Hampden Avenue. "One adult male was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased," police said. "Investigators are working to develop more information about what occurred."
Reports said he was stabbed.

In separate cases, Denver police are investigating non-fatal shootings in the 5900-block of North Dunkirk Street, the 4600-block of West 46th Avenue and the 2300-block of South Sherman Street.

JURY: HE'S GUILTY IN MA KAING MURDER

The verdict took less than a day. 

A jury convicted Pa Reh of first-degree murder in the slaying of Denver community activist and mother-of-four Ma Kaing, who was struck by stray bullet unloading groceries, the DA's office said Tuesday. Reh was engaged in a gunfight when the killing occurred outside Denver's Hidden Brook Apartments in the 1300-block of North Xenia Street, near Aurora, on July 15, 2022.

Police arrested four men in the horrifying case. The others were convicted in separate trials. The deadly hail of bullet was said to be tied to gang warfare.

This smiling woman is suspected of fraudulently withdrawing almost $200,000 from banks in Denver and Longmont by presenting fake ID's, according to a crime alert. "In Denver, the suspect successfully withdrew $80,000 from an account," according to a Longmont Police Department crime alert. "The first in Longmont was on 7/2/25, which was unsuccessful as the Longmont bank employee recognized that the person with the fake ID wasn’t the customer and denied the withdrawal," the alert said. "The second incident in Longmont occurred on 7/11/25, in which the suspect successfully withdrew over $100,000 from the victim’s account." TRUE CRIME: DENVER'S 1880 HOP ALLEY RIOT

On Oct 31, 1880, the Hop Alley Riot broke out in the Denver's Chinatown.

Hop Ally - located in the modern Lodo district - was so-named due to racist associations with opium use.

The disturbance broke out in a pool hall brawl between two Chinese men and a group of drunken whites. A mob, estimated between 3,000 to 5,000 people, descended on Chinatown after the fight spilled into the street.

Sing Lee, a Chinese man, was beaten and hanged from a lamppost - the only known fatality.

Police and firemen struggled to break up the violence, which led to the eventual decline of Denver’s Chinatown.

FIRE AT WOMEN'S PRISON; 3 HURT

Fire at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility injured two inmates and a staff member.

9News reports they were taken to hospital after being exposed to smoke. Saturday's fire was described as small and occurred during an incident in a prison housing unit, officials said. The Denver Fire Department responded.

The Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, located at 3600 Havana Street, is one of two correctional facilities for women in Colorado. It is the largest and houses inmates from across the state at all custody levels. It was built in 1998.

FATAL BUS CRASH NEAR DIA

One person died and several were injured in an overnight collision between a shuttle bus and a pickup truck at Tower Road and 81st Avenue, the Commerce City Police Department said. The location is near Denver International Airport.

One of the victims in Saturday's double-shooting on Lincoln Street in Denver has died. " This is now being investigated as a homicide," police said. The location of the shooting was just south of downtown.

Authorities are investigating the suspicious death of woman at a Lakewood house fire.

The incident occurred Friday night in the 1700-block of Cody Street.

"When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming out of the front room of the structure," West Metro Fire Rescue said. "Upon entry, the body of an adult female was found." The Lakewood Police Department said: "There is no threat to the public." No other injuries were reported.

Dennis Grayson, 51, has been convicted of first-degree murder in the 2016 stabbing death of Alejandro Alvear at a dollar store at Greenbrier Plaza, 7067 Pecos Street, Denver on Sept. 1, 2016, according to 17th Judicial District prosecutors.

2 SHOT, 1 STABBED OVERNIGHT

Two people were injured in a shooting early Saturday in the 1100-block of North Lincoln Street in Denver, just south of downtown, police said.

"One transported to the hospital with serious injuries and one with a minor injury," police said. In another incident, a person was stabbed in the 7700-block of East 23rd Avenue early Saturday, police said.  

I-HOP ON MOM: BABY PANCAKE TORTOISE IS NAMED 'MAPLE'

The votes are in! The Denver Zoo's baby pancake tortoise has a name. It's "Maple."

She's the first of her species to hatch at the Denver Zoo and joins her mom, Waffles, along with three male pancake tortoises. They're named short-Stack, Denny, and Flapjack. The Denver Zoo teamed up with TV's TODAY Show to find the perfect pancake-themed name - and more than 3,400 people cast votes, with Maple the top pick. The species is native to Tanzania, Kenya and northern Zambia. They are called pancakes because of their flat shell.

SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN PARK SLAYING

A judge Friday sentenced Trahavonie Smith to 40 years in prison in the shooting death of Garry Arellano at La Alma-Lincoln Park in April 2022, the Denver DA's Office said. Arellano was trying to break up a fight when he was shot. Smith, 27, was convicted of second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a large capacity magazine.

ACCUSED SERIAL KILLER FORMALLY CHARGED IN AURORA MURDERS

Accused serial killer Ricky Lee Roybal-Smith was formally charged Friday with first-degree murder in the June 29 stabbing deaths of two homeless men in Aurora, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced.

Roybal-Smith, 38, is also accused of killing his cellmate at the Downtown Denver Detention Center on June 30 - hours after his arrest on a parole violation and other charges.

He was later tied to the Aurora slayings in which the homeless men died hours apart on Moline Street and Peoria Street.

Roybal-Smith has a lengthy criminal record.

Denver police are seeking information in the July 8 slaying of Tayjahn Thomas, 23, who was shot in his apartment at Renaissance Lowry Boulevard, 550 Alton Way.

16 CHARGED IN STREET GANG SHOOTINGS, INCLUDING JUVENILES

An elite task force wrapped up a lengthy investigation into Denver area street gang shootings this week, resulting in the arrest of 16 suspects, Aurora police said Thursday. The Regional Anti-Violence Enforcement Network (RAVEN) opened the investigation in June 2024 after ballistic imaging technology confirmed several suspects were mainly responsible for gangland shootings across the Denver area, police said. The suspects - described as "some of the most prolific violent firearm offenders in the region" - face a variety of charges, including violations of the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, and attempted first-degree murder, police said. "The operations resulted in the arrests of 16 suspects, nine of which are juveniles or were minors at the time of the crimes," police said. TIPSY, GUN-TOTING MAN TIED TO ACTIVE SHOOTER SCARE

Following a harrowing few minutes Wednesday, Aurora police arrested a Florida man at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center on charges of unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon while under the influence of alcohol and reckless endangerment. At about 9 p.m., police received 911 calls regarding an active shooter. Officers swiftly located the suspect. No shots were fired.

ARREST DRIVER IN DEADLY I-25 HIT & RUN

Marisol Infante, 29, has been arrested as a suspect in last week's fatal and run accident on I-25 in Denver, police said Thursday. The victim was changing a tire on the shoulder of the interstate between West 6th Avenue and West Alameda Avenue on July 5.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science unearthed a 67.5-million-year-old partial dinosaur below its parking lot—the deepest and oldest fossil discovered in the city limits. The partial vertebra - hidden more than 700 feet below surface - belonged to a plant-eating dinosaur, museum officials announced Wednesday. Drilling to assess the viability of geothermal energy for the museum led to the pre-historic surprise at 2001 Colorado Boulevard. Picasso - a three-year-old Himalayan monal with stunning plumage - is one of the newest arrivals at the Denver Zoo. He's named for influential 20th Century painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso. "These birds are native to Asia including Afghanistan, Bhutan, northeastern India, southern Tibet and Myanmar and are highly expressive," according to his zookeepers. I-25 CRASH: CBI ALERT IN HUNT FOR HIT & RUN DRIVER

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued additional details on a hit-and-run accident that killed a person changing a tire on southbound I-25 in Denver on July 5.

The 2016 black Toyota 4Runner - with Colorado tags ARFH65 and a University of Colorado sticker on the rear window - sustained damage on the passenger side. The accident occurred on the right shoulder of the interstate between West 6th Avenue and West Alameda Avenue at about 7 a.m. Call 911 with information.

ALTON WAY HOMICIDE SCENE

UPDATE

A man was shot and killed Tuesday night in the 500-block of North Alton Way in Denver, police said. The assailant was at large. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. In other incidents across Denver, a person was shot and wounded early Wednesday in the 3000-block of West Gill Place. A person was injured in a Tuesday night stabbing in the vicinity of 40th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.

WILD WEST: NO HORSING AROUND FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Denver firefighters freed a horse trapped in an overturned trailer off I-70 east of downtown. Neither horse nor rescuers suffered injury. The incident occurred in late June.

Denver police are hunting for this fedora-wearing suspect in a harassment and assault case that occurred July 2 on Bassett Street.

The Denver Police Department has distributed more than 300 lifesaving Naloxone kits from "harm reduction vending machines" placed at Denver police stations in May. Naloxone helps prevent fatal opioid overdoses. "There is no need to enter the station—just walk up and take what you need," police say. "Each machine holds up to 75 kits and is restocked regularly." Vending machines are located at District 2 at 3921 N. Holly St., District 6 at 1566 N. Washington St. and the Police Administration Building at 1331 Cherokee St.

A girl fell six stories Monday at an old hotel converted into a city homeless shelter on East Hampden Avenue in Denver. The girl was "awake and responsive" when firefighters and paramedics arrived but sustained multiple injuries, officials said. Reports said the girl is 11. The building had been an Embassy Suites by Hilton.

FIND BODY OF MISSING PADDLER

UPDATE

Searchers recovered the body 0f a missing paddler at Chatfield State Park on Monday night.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife said: "A man and his two children were sharing one paddleboard when a large wind gust knocked them into the reservoir around 4:25 p.m. Nearby paddleboarders witnessed the incident and rescued the two children."

The man's body was recovered about three hours later. He wasn't wearing a lifejacket, officials said.

Adams County Fire Rescue battled a structure fire Monday in the 6600-block of Hooker Street. "Upon arrival, Engine 13 saw a fully engulfed garage and smaller separate living structure," the fire service said. Flames also gutted an SUV. There were no injuries. POLICE SMOKING OUT MYSTERIOUS CIGARETTE BURGLAR

Denver police are on the prowl for a mask-wearing burglar who specializes in cigarette heists at metro area convenience stores.

The nicotine-nabber "consistently conceals their identity with a blue face covering, blue raincoat, and khaki purse," police said Monday.

The after-hours burglaries - involving large quantities of the tobacco products - occurred at numerous convenience stores between March 5 and June 26, police said.

NEIGHBORS DEMAND CITY ACT ON ROAD DANGER

Neighbors are demanding a fix for the treacherous intersection at Monaco Parkway and 17th Avenue in Denver.

The stretch of pavement has been plagued by wrecks in recent years - including a car plowing into a home in December 2023, Greater Park Hill News reports. 

“This intersection is more than just a blind curve with inadequate signage—it stands as a symbol of inaction and neglect,” neighbors said in a letter to city council members.

In separate cases, a person was injured in a moped crash early Sunday near Eighth Avenue and Kalamath Street, and on Saturday a person died in a single-vehicle crash near 31st Street and Arkins Court. 

SAFEWAY ALBERTSONS STRIKE ENDS

Following an all-night bargaining session, union leaders and Safeway Albertsons management reached an agreement to end a three-week strike over health care, pensions and other issues. Workers have until Monday to return to work, according to UFCW Local 7.

POLICE SEEK HIT & RUN DRIVER IN I-25 FATAL ACCIDENT

Denver police are hunting for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a person changing a tire on southbound I-25 early Saturday.

The accident occurred just north of the West Alameda Street exit, on the right shoulder of the interstate.

Police describe the suspect vehicle as a black Toyota 4Runner, which sustained damage on the front passenger's side of the vehicle. The license plate number isn't known. 

"The driver fled the scene of this crash without stopping or leaving information," police said.
