WHITE HOUSE SETS FOOD STAMP CUT-OFF; COLORADO SEES CRISIS

UPDATE

Slicing a hole in America' safety net, the White House announced Sunday plans to suspend the food stamp program effective Nov. 1 due to the federal funding standoff with Congress.

Colorado officials from the state Capitol to city halls and county boards - as well as churches and charities - have been bracing for a feeding crisis.

At the Salvation Army, cupboards are running bare.
“We started seeing it about two weeks ago. This week has been at its height and if trends continue, it seems it’ll just get worse,” Salvation Army Lieutenant Carl Esquivel told Fox 31.

Governor Jared Polis said: “In Colorado, we love everyone and take hunger seriously. I am so disappointed to see the federal government seems to have no urgency or desire to stop families from going hungry.”

Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera said: "Colorado will continue to do everything we can to ensure people don’t go hungry."

The White House announcement was posted on the Agriculture Department website.

MOB TOWN: WHO'S WHO IN COLORADO'S COSA NOSTRA

The Daily Sketch presents here for the mob
aficionado
a Who's Who of known, alleged and purported members and associates of Colorado's "La Cosa Nostra" - from Flip-Flop to Fat Paulie to The Ram and Black Jim.

This motley roll call - it's partial for sure - covers the 20th Century, including known years of activity for some crooks, gleaned from bulletin board posts, books, newspaper accounts and law enforcement archives.

Early Colorado mafioso - criminal "homesteaders" so to speak - traveled West for bootlegging and branched out into gambling and assorted enterprises. Many went to prison. Some repeatedly.

They were believed to have maintained diplomatic ties with St. Louis and New York mob families and other outsiders.

They were:

Giuseppe "Little Caesar" Roma (1931-1933). Reputed iron-fist boss No. 1 of Colorado La Cosa Nostra. A grocer. M
urdered in his living room chair wearing his slippers in Denver in 1933. Pictured to right of photo. Ambitious and violent. Played mandolin. Denver's notorious Smaldone Brothers may have bumped him off. They said they didn't know anything.

Bootlegger Brothers Pete and Sam Carolino. Controlled much of the state's prohibition liquor trade. Murdered in Southern Colorado and Denver, respectively. Pete Carolino, pictured to left of photo with Roma, was accused of bombing his own home on Federal Boulevard in Denver to collect insurance proceeds. It was a professional job.

Charles "Charlie" Blanda (1933-1953). Elevated to boss after Roma's murder. Vincenzo James "Black Jim" Colletti (1931-1972). Elevated to boss when Blanda was sentenced to prison. Born in Sicily. Operated cheese business in Pueblo. Attended embarrassing Apalachin summit of U.S. mob leaders raided by police.

The Smaldone Brothers. Major gambling figures. Eugene "Checkers" Smaldone (1947-1992). Clyde "Flip Flop" Smaldone (1942-1998). Clarence "Chauncey" Smaldone (1960s-2006), Denver's last known capo. Owned Gaetano's Restaurant at 38th and Tejon in North Denver. Tied to a number of slayings. As with Roma's murder, didn't know anything - though Eugene and Clyde got wrapped up in federal jury rigging.

Harold "Murph" Cohen, gambler, went missing after dining at Gaetano's in 1949. Body found in chains in lake in Jefferson County in 1950. Autopsy suggested he never made it past his salad before he was abducted and/or whacked. No pasta. Cohen's friend Mike Falbo was murdered in Adams County in 1948 near gambling den. Again, the Smaldone Brothers didn't know anything.
Former University of Colorado football lineman, gambler and reputed Smaldone associate John "Skip" LaGuardia murdered outside his Lakewood home in 1973. Body sprawled on front lawn. LaGuardia sidekick Ralph "Ralphie Pizzazz" Pizzalato murdered in Denver in 1974. Shot in car in tavern parking lot.

Robin "Walkie Talkie" Roberts, police informant, found dead in ditch in Applewood in Jefferson County in 1963.

Eugene "Young Gene" Smaldone Jr. (1975-1996). Soldier, son of Checkers.

Rosario Dionisio (1931-1955). Caporegime. Ran gambling in Trinidad. Co-owner of Colorado Cheese Company. Born in Sicily. Robert Dionisio (1947-1971). Caporegime, son of Rosario, member of Trinidad Crew.

Joseph "The Ram" Salardino (1931-1967). Caporegime, Pueblo Crew. Gus Salardino (1931-1971). Brother of Joseph. Owned Paradise Club in Canon City. Member, Pueblo Crew.

Joseph James "Scotty" Spinuzzi (1931-1975). Elevated to state boss after James Colletti stepped down in 1972. Anthony "Turk" Spinuzzi (1931-1978) Soldier, brother of Joseph. Member, Pueblo Crew.

Thomas "Whiskers" Incerto (1931-1983). Consigliere. Louis Brindisi (1931-1942). Soldier, Pueblo Crew. John Pacello (1931-1933). Soldier, murdered in 1933.

August "Augie" Marino (1931-1933). Soldier, murdered in 1933. Frank "Blackie" Mazza (1935-1969). Soldier, Denver Crew. Paul "Fat Paulie" Villano (1968-2003). Soldier, Denver Crew. John Pricco (1940s-1963) Soldier, Pueblo Crew. Michael "M.T." Tomeo (1968-1992) Soldier, Denver Crew. Gerald LoSasso (1950s-1977) Soldier, Denver Crew.

Paul "The Harp" Enrichi (1933-1993). Soldier, Pueblo Crew. James Spinelli (1931-1950s). Soldier, Denver Crew. Owner of the Circus Bar in Denver. Born in Calabria. Michael "Mike Parker" Pauldino. (1940s-1977). Soldier, Denver Crew.

Frank "Bull" DeMarco (1931-1960s). Soldier, Denver Crew. Dave "Buck" Buccambuso (1931-1962). Soldier, Pueblo Crew. Carl Cascio (1942-1965). Soldier, Pueblo Crew. Owner of Owls Den Bar in Blend, Colorado. Frank Mortellaro (1942-1957). Soldier, Denver Crew. Paul Surace (1940s-1967) Soldier, Trinidad Crew.

DENVER BASKETBALL LEGEND CHAUNCY BILLUPS NABBED IN MAFIA X-RAY POKER STING; HE DENIES CHARGES

UPDATE

The FBI busted Denver basketball legend Chauncey Billups - now head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers - and others in a nationwide Mafia gambling scam employing X-ray poker card readers.

Mobsters lured gamblers lured into card games - in Las Vegas, Miami and New York - with promises of meeting and competing with professional athletes
, the FBI alleged.

The elaborate, years-long scheme employed sophisticated technology - such as X-ray equipment built into the card tables, cameras tucked in poker trays and sci-fi sunglasses - to snoop on gamblers the mobsters called "fish."

Hall of Fame honoree Billups, 49, graduated from Denver's George Washington High School, where he was a four-time All-State first team pick. He went onto play at the University of Colorado, the Denver Nuggets and other NBA teams

A total of 34 people were charged in the card scam as well as a separate sports betting operation drawing on confidential information on NBA players and teams

"Not only did we crack into the fraud these perpetrators committed on the grand stage of the NBA, but we also entered and executed a system of justice against La Cosa Nostra, to include the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese crime families," FBI Director Kash Patel said Thursday.

Yahoo Sports reported Billups' lawyer, Chris Heywood, said: "To believe that Chauncey Billups did what the federal government is accusing him of is to believe that he would risk his Hall of Fame legacy, his reputation and his freedom. He would not jeopardize those things for anything, let alone a card game."

MOB TOWN: 'MAFIA' MURDER OF ITALIAN COP IN DENVER

A rookie Italian-American police officer was slain in a hail of 28 bullets - an early victim of Colorado's years-long mob war over the bootleg liquor trade during Prohibition.

Officer Richie Rose, 30, was ambushed by a platoon of gunmen while on foot patrol in Denver's Little Italy before dawn on Oct. 31, 1922 - ostensibly because he refused bribes.

Rose, still a rookie, was one of the few Italians on the force - but there were plenty of Italian bootleggers in Colorado, and at least one in his extended family.

"Mafia, Mafia, Mafia," were his dying words, according to some newspaper reports, which may have been somewhat exaggerated. The assailants likely hailed from out of state to evade capture - and were by all accounts Italian, too.

Rose was on hand for at least seven bootleg arrests in 1921 and 1922, based on police records obtained by the Rocky Mountain News.

However, the case quickly went cold - and over 14 years the mob war claimed more than 30 lives across the state, including Rose's brother-in-law, bootlegger Vincenzo Urso in Pueblo the next year. Urso was slain by a shotgun blast while riding in the backseat of a car on June 19, 1923.

Rose was survived by his pregnant wife, Jennie, three sons and a daughter. Their fifth child, a girl, was born in April. They resided at 3738 Kalamath Street. Mrs. Rose heard the shots, ran to the scene in her nightgown and rode in the ambulance carrying her husband to Denver General Hospital.

Reviewing the case years later, Rocky Mountain News reporter Bernard McSherry wrote: "Manager of Safety Frank M. Downer closed up Little Italy tighter than a drum. ... Every suspicious Italian in Denver was rounded up. But none of them broke."

Rose's mother, Mary Decicco of 3715 Mariposa Street, offered a $50 reward that went toward a larger fund for information leading to the arrest of the killers.
